A VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) is the hardware device that physically connects a diagnostic system to the vehicle, translating between the tool’s software and the vehicle’s communication protocols.
The VCI plugs into the OBD port (or brand-specific connectors) and handles CAN, CAN FD, DoIP and other protocols. In tablet-based systems it’s usually a separate wireless dongle; its protocol support defines what the whole platform can reach.
Why it matters
Platform capability is bounded by the VCI: a brilliant software database behind a protocol-limited interface still can’t communicate. Check VCI specs, not just app screenshots.
