SGW

An SGW (Secure Gateway) is a vehicle module that blocks write-level diagnostic access — clearing codes, calibrations, programming — unless the tool authenticates through the manufacturer’s authorisation scheme.

Introduced to harden vehicles against unauthorised network access, secure gateways mean diagnostic tools must be registered and users authenticated (typically via online accounts) before protected functions unlock. Coverage of SGW schemes varies by tool brand.

Why it matters

For independent workshops, SGW turns tool choice into an access question: a platform without smooth authorisation support for the brands you service leaves you reading codes you cannot clear.
